Endometriosis patients tend to suffer from poorer body image and greater self-criticism. These are likely due to their acknowledgment that a sick body will constantly fail to meet societal standards of beauty. It worsens with the limitations and appearance changes associated with weight gain/loss caused by hormonal therapy, scars from surgery, paleness resulting from heavy bleeding and anemia, or physical symptoms caused by induced menopause (tiredness, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and poor libido). The constant self-judgment promotes the sense of failure and the need to escape and thus transpires the vicious cycle of self-criticism.
I struggle with it too. With every surgery & treatment I went through, I find it hard to adjust and accept the ‘new look’ (scars and whatnot). With this sentiment in mind, I started my first design draft last year. Following this, addressing a series of procurement issues that took months to rectify before finally materializing Singapore’s first Endometriosis merchandise. The item is individually packed & bubble-wrapped a few times to ensure it would safely reach the recipient.
May this labor of love remind the receiver of how amazing they are, with or without Endometriosis. I hope it makes them smile and adds value to their life.
