There are moments in life that stay with you long after the day has ended. Last week’s Patient Voices Symposium was one of those moments for me. What many did not see was that my period came the night before, unexpectedly early and painfully intense. It was my first cycle after surgery, and the pain was maddening. I had to be on high doses of painkillers just to remain upright, let alone to stand through a gallery walk and speak to participants.

But what made the day bearable, and even beautiful, were the women who stood beside me. My endometriosis sisters, Ivy, Natalie and Moji, were by my side from the moment they arrived. They anchored me with their presence, watched over me quietly, and created this invisible circle of strength around me that carried me through the pain. Natalie showed up even while battling her own pain, and that kind of courage is something I will always hold close.

The organisers from OPEN Voices checked on me throughout the event too. Their gentleness reminded me that compassion is not loud, but it is powerful. Even the participants who came to view the gallery made sure I was alright. One by one, they reassured me that help was readily available if I needed it. Their kindness softened the intensity of the physical discomfort and reminded me of the humanity that runs through patient-led spaces.

I wanted to honour that in this space today. Because the truth is, community is not only built through shared missions or big events. It is built in the quiet ways we show up for one another. In the way women whisper, “I’ve got you.” In the gentle glance of someone making sure you are ok. In the willingness to hold space for another person’s pain without flinching.

Last week, I was reminded that I am surrounded by people who carry their strength with softness. People who lend courage without needing applause. People who turn an overwhelming day into one held with grace, warmth and safety.

To my endo sisters who stand shoulder to shoulder with me. To the organisers who worked with such sincerity. To the participants whose empathy lit up the room. Thank you for holding me up on a day my body was struggling to stand. Thank you for reminding me that even on painful days, I am not alone. And thank you for showing me, once again, that pain shared is pain softened. 🫶🏻
